Bloated Consumer annoyance
May. 6th, 2007 01:04 pmI just saw the most disgusting display of arrogant American bloated consumer bullshit. I had promised myself that I was staying off the Int0rwebs once I got to the office, but seriously, this was bad.
I hit Dunks before going to the office. It's RIGHT there and I didn't have the time for a decent breakfast, and didn't really want to eat something out of the freezer. Sure that croissant with egg isn't the best at ALL but it's on the way. I was procrastinating mightly and this at least got me out of the house.
To say this Dunks worked slow today is an understatement. Those tortises from the cable commercial ("YOU come push it! You push it REAL GOOD!") move faster. There were three little girls, running around grabbing coffee and donuts. Everyone seemed to have a huge order, and they were pretty busy. The one serving me actaly looked afraid at the idea of a sammich.
Anyway that's how I first noticed her. She started verbally grabbing the girl getting my coffee, saying "WHERE is the MANAGER, I HAVE TO GO!!!!" Exclaimation points hers. She's at the "Pick up" counter, looking frazzled. She felt ignored, and probably rightly so. It wasn't so busy that three girls couldn't handle it, but they were totally running around.
Well then, thanks to her bellowing, the whole story started to come out. That's when I started getting - well, annoyed. i didn't want to, it's none of my business, but when you're harrassing three little girls who can't DO ANYTHING but hand out donuts without asking permission, that's going over a line. I've been there, if they're busy and there's stuff to do and it takes a while, it's OK, if I were in a hurry - well nothing's worth the ulcer.
Seems HausFrau had purchased a $15 gift card, what I assume is earlier that day. I frankly don't know. If it was days ago, it makes me hate her more. however, let's assume she had come out, gotten an order and the gift card, maybe made it home, then realized what happened and came back. The clerk had accidentally charged her for a $50 dollar gift card, and she wanted a refund. Who knows if she got $50 or $15 on the card, I wasn't paying attention to what the manager was doing. I believe she handed over the card, and he gave her a credit for the whole thing, no harm no foul. But, given her attitude, I wouldn't be surprised if she walked out with a gift card, with $50 in credit on it, and no charge on her card. It was just that kind of attitude.
So the manager, from what I heard as she got more and more agitated and made demands to SEE HIM IMMEDIATELY! was not versed in doing this kind of refund. He stated later that he'd never done one. So he called HIS boss, who instructed him on how to do it. Seems reasonable. Probably would take a while. After all it's Sunday, what general manager works on Sunday, for that matter who ends up getting stuck with the Sunday AM shift, but the greenhorn.
Well.
She bitched at the girls, because they weren't getting the manager, she bitched at them because he wasn't coming out. When he DID come out, which wasn't ALL that long, she bitched him out for NOT giving proper customer service, proceeded to INSTRUCT him on what he should have done, and practically threw the information he needed over the counter at him.
The kicker, that one that had me seeing red - she played the Baby card.
"I have a baby at home!"
"I need to get home to my baby!"
"I HAVE A LITTLE BABY AT HOME DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND????"
my personal favorite
"This is now costing me money, I have a babysitter at home WITH THE BABY and I have to pay her for YOUR mistake!"
So, it was OK to leave THE BABY at home while your overly thin, tanned, and bleached ASS can get coffee and a gift card? But when it comes to someone else wanting to do their job properly, to give you the service you claim to need, you can't spare 10 minutes?
I almost punched her. I almost stepped in and said "You know what, MUTHERFECKING CHILL!" I almost told her what I thought of her, and her attitude, and made her apologize to how she was treating these children.
I didn't. I don't think it's MY right to push MY opinion on her. On anyone.
(an attitude that I wish some people would learn. And I'm the bitch. Sheesh. I mean sometimes, when something isn't right, regular people need to step in. That's how I ended up modding GothicBoston - what was going on was wrong.)
OH but I WISH TO JEEBUS she had said something to me. It's my observation that people in a rant, who are SO superior and busy making someone feel small, want Mob Agreement. HAD she said something to me, had she brought me into this, I could have GONE OFF, with no guilt, or feeling that I had intruded.
The final strike against her - I got out before her, got into my car and got settled and saw her run out (after all she had A YOUNG BABY AT HOME that needed coffee) and get into - the biggest SUV in the lot. I believe it was an Explorer. The ones that get 10 miles to the gallon. I also was behind her as she pulled out of the lot, and cut off a bunch of people at a red light to make her right on red. Because the baby needs coffee.
I see this kind of thing in the UK, when I do touristy things - the Americans acting like asshats. I don't BLAME Europeans for hating the behaviour, and the Americans, it's gross. I was/am ashamed to be in the same group as this bleach blonde, minimum wage harassing, arrogant fucking asshole.
I can only hope the gas guzzler broke down on her way home to THE BABY (Which is another point, I know plenty of people with kids, and the kids aren't the be all end all of everything. Did you want to cut in line because you have a baby at home? Oh, you've had a baby? Well you need to get home to it, you go first. It doesn't make you Special, it makes you a mom. The attitude change is YOURS not mine! Do I help people with kids who are struggling, say to get up stairs? Sure, that's more human, to help out someone in need. Do I think a lady in an Explorer is more important in the line for coffee because she has A BABY AT HOME? NO! It's effing coffee, not brain surgery, or a transplant list. BTW your baby doesn't get the liver first either, we needs it for drinkin'!)
GAH.
Ok, it's out, thanks, now to get to work.

Date: 2007-05-06 07:20 pm (UTC)I told him a) he never had to give his # b) it wasn't her fault, she's just trying to pay her way through college likely c) be nice to people it's more important than sticking it to "the Man".
At that point I got mob agreement (not really meaning to) and while he tried to defend his point he mainly ran out of the store as fast as he could.
So I totally understand your point.
