That no matter how old we get and how much we know better, it's still important to get your parent's approval?
After the conversation with Saturn, I called my Mommy. I needed assurance I was doing the right thing. When I said "X and Y and and by the way Z" she said "That's true, you might be right." and that made ALL the freaking difference!
So, the call finally came. I had just left *financial place* and the phone rings. The kyute boi in the earplugs teases me in a sexy voice. He needs to NOT DO THAT until I get laid! *shudder* Anyway, I sit and he starts telling me about the car. What I thought was wrong with it, ISN'T What's wrong with it.
- Serpentine belt is a-squeekin' (No it's not, you're imagining things)
- Front brakes (not wrong, but "only" 85% gone, I have some time)
- Muffler (well, yah, we know that. Muffler ONLY, if I go to Midas, don't let em sell me anything else)
Then he says "here's what you need"
- An oil change EVERY 3000 MILES, no exceptions. The car MIGHT be eating oil, and it's not leaking. The SL series is meant to be a workhorse, it's supposed to take what I'm dishing out, it just needs maintenance on time. IF it's eating oil, it's only a matter of time before it goes *ka-thunk" That day is not today, nor anytime soon.\
- A buncha lights out in the dash. Safety issues, I ight not pass inspection if not done.
- a safety arm on the passenger side wheel.that ALSO might cause me to not pass inspection, is looking ready to "come apart" it ain't cheap to fix, but necessary.
So, immediate needs are $100 today, which includes an oil change, $400 for the safety items, $250 for the brakes, $250 for the monster oil change I want in the near future. About $1000, which was my limit.
There is an L200 on the Saturn lot, in the price range I kinda set for myself. But I might not get the loan to get it, and it's older anyway.
My thought (which I told to the Unit) is that I should fix the car. With care, it should last through the end of the year, with pushing I think it'll last through next tax season. Knowing this, my priorities have to change. Saving up a nice down payment, and working with companies to get my credit looking as good as it can, and getting all my tax return ducks in a row, could have me in the BRAND NEW CAR I want next year.
Personally, I think that is a wise, and good way to go. I shouldn't put money into a car I'll be getting rid of, and putting myself into a car loan I might not be able to afford, no matter how small the payment. I fear putting myself into a position I can't handle with a budding practice. Next year, it won't be budding, and I'll KNOW what I can afford.
I'm going to go get the car in a little bit. I'm going to look at the used car. I'm going to come home and form a plan for getting myself more organized. Then, I'm going to make an appointment for the major work that needs to be done. I like the idea of having the work done in phases. I'm thinking I do something every week or so. Next week is the major repairs. A week later is the muffler Two weeks later are the brakes. Last is the big oil change.
I wish I had a car dude to talk to. CB would have been very useful right now. *sighs*
I'm going to wait until after rush hour tho, I don't feel like trolling around in traffic after driving all around yesterday. I'm feeling icky and FINALLY feeling hungry. I think I'm going to recind my offer to H about sushi, and get Hot and Sour, and something chicken-y. Hmmm, chicken-y.
More later.....
*addendum* I just thought of something - they said NOTHING about my dropping into gears. If it was an issue, wouldn't they have found it? *broody broody broody*

Date: 2004-04-15 03:37 pm (UTC)They did an hour long "saftey inspection" but they KNOW about the dropping into gears, I've complained about it before. I can't really be sure about that, because they gear thing could be irritated by the need of s new muffler, and the oil change. I'm gambling that my catalytic converter isn't about to drop out *grins* but I think the car will behave better once all the little things are done.
I haven't had them do anything YET. I'm going to look around at loans, and at the used cars. I'm going to ask around about the converter, and see whats up.
I told you to just file an extension. Whatever you did we can fix with a 1040 X if you ended up filing. *sighs* you silly boys! *grins*
