Problem: Some taxpayers have received official-looking forms in the mail that offer to calculate - for a fee - the amount taxpayers could receive in their advance payment refund checks. There is no need for taxpayers to pay a fee to determine the amount of their advance refund.

Who's affected: Taxpayers in a few areas of the country have received these mailings.

What IRS is doing about the problem: The IRS is sending notices to taxpayers that explain how much their advance payment will be and when to expect the check. An alternative notice explains that, while the taxpayer does not qualify for a check now, they may be able to qualify for a credit next year. The IRS has also provided on its web site all the information necessary to determine how much a taxpayer should receive in their advance refund payment check.

What affected taxpayers should do: Taxpayers should ignore any offer that charges a fee to determine the amount of an advance payment. No forms, applications or calls are required for taxpayers to receive their advance payment checks. The process is completely automatic and simple.
