This is annoying
Aug. 5th, 2003 10:07 am*warning - rant ahead*
On the way home from dropping my nephew off, post coffee, I heard this commercial. It was saying "Did you know, people with Master's degrees make about $11,000 MORE than people with bachelor degrees?" This pisses me off.
First - I don't consider $11,000 a lot of money. Seriously. It's not a down payment on a house, AND it's PRE tax - which means it's more like $7,000. more. And, let's factor in the cost of, say, MY undergraduate degree (*coughcoughsixtythousandcoughcough*) and what it would cost for me to get a Masters (*coughtwentyfivethousandcough*)
Let's not even mention that this commercial was for a school I would NEVER consider personally (Let's face it, I'm an accountant. For me, that means Northeastern, BU, or Bentley. And for ME - it means Northeastern. I hated Bentley. Hated. LOATHED. Yuck.) Now, OK, the school might have some merits, so I'm not saying "hey the school sucks." I'm saying it's not for me.
Personally, the resulting increase in salary following acquisition of a MAsters will be HELLA lot more than $11,000. Of course, there would be a resulting increase in responsibility which I'm NOT ready for,and then my personal need to THEN take (and pass!) the CPA exam. (Not to tread on anyone's recent relative's success. I KNOW how hard the damn thing is, TWICE. Much props in THAT direction. I wasn't and am not ready. And it sucks. I truly believe it sucks more than the Bar. The Bat doesn't have a whole section of the insanity known as "Governmental/Fund Accounting." Don't talk to me about hard, M'kay?)
And then, there are my friends who have exceptional financial and professional success, without ANY college! I mean, is that just dismissed?
I was offended by the commercial, and I'm their target audience. professional with a Bachelor's. it took my degree to get me in the door. By NOW, my professional experience gets me what I want and need. The Masters would SOLELY make me feel better, make me feel more "capable" it wouldn't do anything for my bosses or clients. And that's an expensive and time consuming process.
(Disclaimer - This is NOT a jibe against anyone who is IN a Master's program. this is solely directed at the offensive commercial, and myself. There are some professions that require the Masters, to proceed, you need the advanced degree. I'm not talking about that. Nor am I trying to put down the advanced effort I know some of my friends have gone through. I am exceptionally proud of my friends who have taken the effort, and have the balls to step forward like they are. I'm talking about ME, my desire for Grad school, my frustration at my inability to get there, AND that STUPID commercial, which was meant to put down people for NOT having the Masters. And trying to get to you go to a school I think of as High School part Deux, and not as having some sort of Master's program. Thank you, drive through.)
*end rant*
now I must pee. Back later....

Date: 2003-08-05 07:13 am (UTC)Mine is an MST - Master of Science in Taxation.
*narf*
That sounds super interesting, tho! And it's something you're interested IN which I think is more important.
I'm fortunate that I actually LIKE accounting, so work is never really a chore - it's usually the people interaction that's worse.

Date: 2003-08-05 07:44 am (UTC)there are very few masters in hr. one is at lesley u.
i suppose one could get an mba, but really i don't want to go that route. i'm not really interested in org management or anything that high-level.
so instead i got an HR grad certificate (from the 'yucky' bentley ;p ) and will probably get my PHR, which is similar to a CPA or other certifying exams. who knows when that will be?
like you, i am in a field where most of one's expertise and 'cred' if you will comes from real-world work experience. i learned the law(s) and theory at bentley and now i'm applying it. both are equally important.

Date: 2003-08-05 07:45 am (UTC)sis-in-law pretty much wanted and needed the cpa since she's the controller for a group of radio stations. ;)
not to mention her BA and MS are in... psych iirc. ;p

Date: 2003-08-05 07:56 am (UTC)It's odd she'd need the CPA for that - an advanced Management MBA should have been sufficient. But, then again, I'm conditioned to think "Public accounting" when I think CPA. One of Northeastern's down points, that conditioning.

Date: 2003-08-05 07:54 am (UTC)It just wasn't for me - I didn't like the enviorment. Now, remember, I was a budding goth goddess, who was JUST beginning to taste freedom. The LAST thing I wanted was the enviorment that bentley gave off.
bentley IS an excellent education - one of my bosses has his MST from Bentley. If I 1) didn't just loathe the place *grins* and 2) didn't LOVE Northeastern AND 3) know that Northeastern's MST program was just as good I'd be very depressed about the MST subject.
Rawk on with your Bachelor'd self.
PS - after seeing pictures of your house, I should rethink your offer *evil grin* I *HEART* that turret room (I', not seriously considering - it's just too far out for me to go, considering where my employment is)

Date: 2003-08-05 08:01 am (UTC)i could imagine actually going their full-time (either as a residential or day student) would have been Not Me. (kind of like that semester I was a day student at Providence College, but that's another story. ;p )
my BA is in french fwiw. ;p
regarding your p.s.; i figured it was too far out. so you'll have to visit.
