I had said I installed XP over the weekend, and lost my modem in the process. Last night, around Buffy, I took the computer apart to get my modem, get rid of some dust *sneeze*, and discover I HAVE a network card in there already for the cable modem *blushes*

I found that this definately was a gift, it was a US Robotics, but it's CANADIAN! *grumble* I found the drivers, and .INF files, and got the thing working. THEN I discovered Norton's Antivirus wasn't working. I Need to jump through ALL sorts of hoops to get it running, and didn't have time to last night (Hint - It involves uninstalling Norton's, completly, as in raiding the registry, and then reinstalling the newer version, I'm going to end up on the phone with them asking for a CD, since I downloaded this from them and don't have NOTHIN' *sigh*)

BUT - as I discovered in one of my Norton Reboots - the modem drivers aren't happy with XP, and do NOT want to work right, and causes the modem to vanish every time I reboot, or rather, cease working. I have to REINSTALL every time. OK, I know there's a better fix for this - cable modem comes tomorrow, I'm NOT worrying about it, maybe I can fix it gooderer *grins* after I have access to the internet that DOESN'T use my modem, and I can afford to screw with it.

*kicks the computer* I'm tempted to just BUY a newer modem, as a backup plan. I'm seriously unhappy about Norton's. I have to get on Broadband without any protection on my computer, since I'm going to WAIT til I have a connection to fix anything. ESPIECIALLY since I haven't got the time to do ANYTHING about it til the weekend, oh, and did I mention I have to WORK on Saturday??? *sighs* *groans* So much for my day off.

I just want this to work. I should take Thursday off, and run and get everything, like run up to [livejournal.com profile] kazamadaddy's to get the cabling, but NO, of course _I_ can't have a day off. (no, I'm not bitter AT ALL, why do you ask?)

well, i guess it's too late now, but there are generally a few universal truths in windows upgrades:

* write down all the hardware first, so you know what it is
* make sure it's all going to work
* do the same for software
* back up data to a new machine
* format
* install windows
* reinstall all applications
* restore data

anything else leads to, well, this.
