Ok, so I upgraded to XP, on my desktop machine, and now I can't friggin use the Modem. I'm on the laptop right now. It SEES the modem, tells me that one of the COM ports isn't working, and has recommended an update to the .IXP file, except I have NO idea who made my modem (it's picking "Generic") nor can i GET ONLINE to upgrade.

Anyone have any thoughts? It says that my modem is busy, except it's not.
Plus I REALLY need the internet to make sure everything is upgraded and updated prior to the Cable Modem coming in on Thursday.

*isgh* Nothing is ever easy.
OH - and one more thing - Can I remove 98/ME Backup files? I have NO ROOM on my C: drive all of a sudden. I need to move the files around, but, surprise surprise, I'm having trouble getting Explorer to play MY way. I HATE not having the time to devote to doing things right.

I met some nice peeps tonight. And I don't feel so white bread, even the hardcore ain't so hardcore, ya know?

regarding the modem...

do you have the ethernet card installed already for the cable modem? you could get the updated driver (if there is one) from the laptop, then transfer it from the laptop to the desktop via ethernet. alternately you could do a floppy.

as far as the updates go, it might be worth it to wait to update it until the cable comes in. there are a lot of updates, and it will take forever over a modem.

i've never done a 98 to xp upgrade, so i don't know anything about the backup files.
