London, Day 2 (cont.)
Nov. 22nd, 2002 12:26 amOK, so I got up (finally) aftermuch mocking from J. about how I came ALL this way, to write emails *makes a face* I popped down to the Underground, and made my way over to the British Museum. I had found mention in one of my books about a small Cafe to have a small sandwich, or pastry, and it really sounded good, but as I got off the Tube, I wasn't sure which way was which, so I decided just to follow the signs for the museum. I found a small cafe, and stopped there for food, as by this time I was super hungry. The ladies were UBER friendly, got me to sit, got me an EXCELLENT cup of coffee, and took my order. I pulled out my book, thinking that the name of the place sounded familar - and it seems I'd found the very Cafe I'd been looking for! (No I can't remember what it is now, it's in the book!) Lunch was coffee, a several-kinds-of-meat sandwich, with melted cheddar cheese, and a small vinigar/oil salad, followed by a chocolate torte which almost did me in.
So then I go around the corner, to find the HUGE facade of the British Museum, I almost didn't want to go in. One thing I'm LOVING so far, is that all my major event things have been free. I made a 5 pound dontation to the Museum, but I knew I wanted to do that. I wander right into the big hall, which used to be an open courtyard, but they put a dome on it, and it's a libary and restaurant now. I was going to wander around orderly-like, and see what might not be open late, and then saw a Rameses head, and said "F-THAT right in the ear!" and barreled on into the Egyptian rooms. These contained all the large stauary. I almost cried, I was totally overwhelmed. Outragous items I wanted to take home - four large (about 8 feet) statues of Sehkmet, made of black granite. Oh, and there was the Rosetta Stone. That one almost knocked me over, it's SO simple, it's just a black stone with scribblings on it, but it was SO damn important to Egyptology as we know it. There were A LOT of statues of Sehkmet, a loverly (famous) Black and gold Bastet cat, some sarcophagi, many large heads, and a few Horus falcons. One had freaky eyes. I managed to drag myself away, and got a minor diappointment. I wasn't impressed with the Mummy rooms. They were nice and informative, perhaps nothing jumped out at me, perhaps there were too many tourists. *shrug* I'm far more impressed with the statues and sarcophagi. I ended up seeing the whole museum, except for some closed rooms. I took a lot of pictures, mostly of Statues, and just things that caught my eye. Some jewelry, some cups, portraits of George I and his queen, some drinking horns, more for Lou and Howie. There was this one Roman head, or Augustus, that had painted eyes, like the Horus, that were FREAKY, he was staring at me *shudder* I stayed over 4 hours., a new record for me. And I had to say goodbye to the Sehkmet ladies before I could leave.
I had decided to walk to one of the marketplaces J had told me about, but I ended up going in the wrong direction, and barely found a Tube station, so I ended up coming back. J came in about 20 minutes after I did, and we ordered in, and I'm making a "short" night of it. Some people would want to cram too much into too short a time, but I'm all for leasurly strolling, and making the best out of what I WANT to see. It's like NYC, I know people who go and go and go, and I really believe that there's plenty of time without putting too much into one visit. Like last time. I went to see the Cruxshadows. I saw them, and got to walk around Chinatown. I consider that a full weekend. I have a week, I don't need to bolt all over town and exhaust myself into being sick. J was a bit bemused by my attitude, although he agrees with me. He said it was nice I was taking that attitude, I think he expected me to be all over the place.
Tomorrow is bringing the Tower of London, I think, as J's been there and doesn't feel the need to go again. Then I think I'll pop back to the V&A and get those postcards I've promised
azanthia possibly doubles for
fieryredhead if she's so inclined.
ONe reason I shouldn't be alone here tho. I find myself talking to myself, and laughing at my own stupid jokes. This afternoon I missed
kazama a lot, when I was going down a set of stairs and encountered a big statue of Budda "now that's a big BUdda!" said I, but noone, but me, laughed. On the same staircase, I found a black granite statue of Ganesha, and ANY Simpsonfile sould have to say -
*Homer voice*
"I am the grat god Ganesh. You will stop this wedding or I will be ANGRY!"
*/Hv*
*Hindu voice, in Hindu*
You are not Ganesha! Ganesha is graceful! You are not graceful!
*/Hv,iH*
I nearly peed myself giggling, but people looked at me funny.
G - You should have SEEN all the Ganesha statues. I took a bunch of pics. Oh, and one of Shiva called "Dancing Shiva" and now I NEED to create something in Photoshop of "Dancing Homer" with like 6 fat yellow arms, and a big crown thingy. (All I could think of was Dancing Homer) No statues of Kali tho *pouts*
And I NEED a sugardaddy - they had this delicious Bastet cast from the neato statue, but it was over $500 and I just can't spend all my money on one damn cat.
*hang head in shame*
I did buy myself stuff, a silver and amethyst bracelet and a pendant, that was 45 pounds together, which will be about, oh $60 when I get the thing on my debit card. BAD Tia! No beer for you tonight.
OK I want to watch some Lexx, and possibly take a shower, but I need to plan my attack for tomorrow. Wheee!
