I've been threatening to do so, like saying it will somehow scare the weather gods "oh shit she's going to sleep in the living room with the A/C on QUICK send a breeze!"
But the fact is I don't want to sleep on the couch. My living room is in a state of disarray, with boxes pulled apart and stuff all over the place. There's dust and clutter and it's not at all conductive to ease (this is why I don't let people come over. Mostly) I have to think that the A/C moves all that dust and nast around the room.
Plus I LIKE my bed, although it might be approaching time to get a new one. Its about 9 years old, and there are times it's not comfy. Maybe because it needs to be flipped - it has a sweet spot and every time I flip it I get away from the spot. I probably just need to give it up and sleep in the good spot until I get a new mattress. The new frame has helped IMMENSELY, the bed is sturdy and flat and doesn't wiggle or anything. (Minds out of the gutter kids, but I will say I have a higher level of comfort in inviting people over to spend the night in my bed now that I'm sure it won't hit the floor at midnight!)
But last night was the kicker. I stayed out of the bedroom, left the lights off but the fans on, kept my laptop in the living room and the A/C on in there til I went to bed. When I settled down I was nice and cool. I even started to drift to sleep. But then I woke up and started having flashes of heat (and I'm not so old that I should be having hot flashes, than you!) and found my self rolling over and over AND OVER again.
I mean I can't operate with broken sleep! That's worse than shorting myself sleep - sleeping solidly for 5 hours is WAY better than sleeping for 8+ where I'm waking up every hour for some reason. Especially when I'm waking up hot as hell.
It's this damn room. The master bedroom has the ability to have an A/C but it also does indeed vibrate. I do not want to move into that room, this is my bedroom. But being near the laundry room (IE right over it) makes it oddly warm. I've been known to open my window in the dead of winter and be nice and comfy. We barely turn on the heat except in the coldest of the winter, due to the radiating heat. But my location, and the viability of my windows makes installing an A/C unit impossible. Not to mention the stuff I have around, I can't really even set up a swamp cooler because of the way I've done things in the corner (add to that the lack of room for a portable, and my inability to get at the window easily. Can't waste the space!)
I've grinned and borne it for a long time I don't recall it being this bad. Usually I can at least sleep. This I don't like at all. So like it or not, before I go out I'm setting up the couch, and bringing my clock radio and chargers into the living room so I can just come home, turn on the A/C and sleep. I have an early morning tomorrow and I need my rest.

Date: 2009-08-21 04:32 pm (UTC)1) "tiny paycheck does not allow" for extra AC in the LR
2) And yes, "using fans in conjunction A/C's" does help too! (I do that)
And this are things I did when I lived in a big old house with no AC
1) Early in the morning, before the sun has been up very long, close all the windows and pull down the shades. If you have heavy curtains draw them shut too.
2) When you get home, shut your bedroom door, and put a box fan in the window. If it is hotter in the room then the outside, put the fan on high and facing OUT. If it is cooler outside then in the room, out the fan on high and facing IN. Also keep the room dark aka no lightbulbs.
3) When you are ready for bed, take a shower and put nightclothes on when you are damp so the clothing is damp too. Do not dry your hair. Some folks use damp sheets.
4) Take the box fan out the bedroom windows and shut the windows. Place in the fan in the living room facing your bedroom.
5) Put gel ice packs in your pillows. Use a hot water bottle with ice water near your feet and/or side.
My parents also used a de-humidifier. I can't remember if it worked or not. They also have insulated shades in the room of too many windows. They were spendy but really helped in the summer AND the winter.
