You answered my two suggestions by saying 1) "tiny paycheck does not allow" for extra AC in the LR 2) And yes, "using fans in conjunction A/C's" does help too! (I do that)
And this are things I did when I lived in a big old house with no AC 1) Early in the morning, before the sun has been up very long, close all the windows and pull down the shades. If you have heavy curtains draw them shut too. 2) When you get home, shut your bedroom door, and put a box fan in the window. If it is hotter in the room then the outside, put the fan on high and facing OUT. If it is cooler outside then in the room, out the fan on high and facing IN. Also keep the room dark aka no lightbulbs. 3) When you are ready for bed, take a shower and put nightclothes on when you are damp so the clothing is damp too. Do not dry your hair. Some folks use damp sheets. 4) Take the box fan out the bedroom windows and shut the windows. Place in the fan in the living room facing your bedroom. 5) Put gel ice packs in your pillows. Use a hot water bottle with ice water near your feet and/or side.
My parents also used a de-humidifier. I can't remember if it worked or not. They also have insulated shades in the room of too many windows. They were spendy but really helped in the summer AND the winter.
